Otherwise, each letter corresponds to a syllable. Letters representing consonants are combined to form digraphs ( ಒತ್ತಕ್ಷರ ottakṣara) when there is no intervening vowel. Consonantal letters imply an inherent vowel. The character set is almost identical to that of other Brahmic scripts.
